THE WALLS HAVE STORIES TO TELL IN CANNES – FOLLOW THE TREASURE HUNT TO SEE CANNES’ CLOSE LINKS WITH THE CINEMA

The love affair between Cannes and the cinema started 70 years ago and is still going strong. For 70 years the streets have erupted into madness every May, at the time of the International Film Festival. This passion for the silver screen has become a major facet of Cannes’ identity. So much so, that the extent of its influence can be seen from simply talking a stroll around the city’s streets.

Cannes has paid tribute to the movie industry and film stars on the walls and façades, giving them a true identity and true originality: close-ups of superstars and memorable scenes from great movies have been put into the spotlight. A stroll through the streets here turns into a treasure hunt to find the iconic façades with their beautiful, nostalgic images. Here, even the walls play a starring role! Several wall paintings inspired by the silver screen pay tribute to the greatest movie stars: Bourvil, James Dean, Jean Paul Belmondo and many more. The trail starts in Place du Suquet where you can see Jacques Tati coming out of a hotel. Further on, a remarkable trompe l’oeil catches your attention… no, there isn’t a balcony, or a window!

A short detour into Boulevard Vallombrosa is an opportunity to say hello to Charlot, in larger than life close-up on the side of a building. At 29 Boulevard Victor Tuby, you will be caught on camera by the legendary Buster Keaton. In Place de la Gare, Jean Gabin strikes a proud pose on an immense façade. But even he is outdone by Alain Delon, in the glow of youth, on Avenue Francis Toner in the heart of the city. So many amazing, majestic façades to be discovered as you wander through Cannes. On top of all this, images and also life-size cutouts of movie stars are scattered all over the city. Haven’t we all dreamed of being Zorro or Lara Croft? Every street is a fresh surprise… and you won’t find this anywhere except in Cannes!

The Patio des Artistes is only too happy to share all these discoveries with you. The theme of your trip continues here: the artists who have been coming to Cannes since 1939 also take pride of place here. Don’t be surprised if you happen to meet Louis de Funès round the corner in one of our corridors!
